Art Basel Miami 2018 - Report

14/12/2018
Art Basel Miami isn’t just about big sales and exclusive invitation only dinner parties. It is also about charity and giving away to a good cause. As the art dealers applauded this year’s strong sales and completion of the Miami Beach Convention Center renovation, which resulted in roomier booths with increased space for art, Sotheby’s joined forces with BONO’S organization to raise funds for HIV/ AIDS prevention in Africa.

A charity auction held by Sotheby’s and Bono’s organization in support of HIV/AIDS prevention in Africa, RED, at the Moore Building in Miami’s Design District raised $10.5 million, including $5.5 million in matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Artist Theaster Gates of Chicago set a personal record with the sale of his work “A Flag for the Least of Them” for $807,000.

Centred on the theme of light and the colour red, the collection of contemporary art and design was exhibited and auctioned during Art Basel in Miami Beach and Design Miami on 5th December. The auction featured contemporary art and design donated by Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, Sean Scully, Sir Jonny Ive and Marc Newson, Jennifer Guidi, Wangechi Mutu and other prominent artists and designers.

Robert Kelly, whom Rosemont Art Advisory has featured in our previous newsletter has also made his solo appearance at Untitled Art Miami Beach with the Frameless Art Gallery.
